The Beaufort West area includes the towns of

Beaufort West            Nelspoort       and      Merweville

Beaufort West

The town was established in 1818 by the Governor of the Cape, Lord Charles Somerset to curb lawlessness in a district where hunters, traders, adventurers, explorers, smugglers and outlaws constantly crossed swords. The prosperous farm Hooyvlakte at the foot of the Nuweveld mountains provided an ideal site and the town was named in honour of the Governor's father, the fifth Duke of Beaufort.

Beaufort West is the oldest town in the Central Karoo and its municipality, proclaimed in 1837, is the oldest in South Africa. With modern road and rail links, Beaufort West is ideally situated as a central base from which to explore the Great Karoo and passes of the Swartberg Mountains. It is also the gateway to holiday resorts of the Western, Eastern and Southern Cape.

There's so much to do and see in the district that Beaufort West has its own website. Click here for all the details.

Nelspoort

The Nelspoort Sanatorium, officially opened by the Prince of Wales in 1925,  was considered to be one of the finest TB hospitals in the world. The area's other claim to fame are the Bushman engravings and the "bushman piano's" - stone gongs whose exact purpose has been lost in the annals of time.

Merweville

Merweville maintains a great deal of old world charm.  It is an ideal spot to  rest, relax and unwind from the pressures of modern-day city life.  There are some guest houses in the town where visitors can look after themselves or arrange to enjoy some traditional Karoo fare prepared by the locals, and there are farms which offer superb eco-tourism experiences.

The village is easy to reach along good quality gravel roads.                                                                 Photo: Saxe-Coburg Lodge, Prince Albert
